On December 10, 2024, ÌìÃÀÂ鶹 team members connected with 500+ attendees for our 2025 Trends Report webinar, Navigating the Future of Global Student Mobility.

During the webinar, we highlighted patterns to watch and steps organizations can take to prepare for—and adapt to—shifts in student mobility and technology implementation. As artificial intelligence continues to change classroom and operational approaches, we also polled attendees to gauge how their organizations plan to implement AI tools:

Only 4% of respondents’ organizations were not planning to increase their investment in AI within the next two years. Just over two in five were unsure of their organization’s approach, where half of respondents said greater investment in AI was likely.

Attendees also asked thoughtful questions, from how student loans work to asking for resources to learn about the education system and culture of different study destinations (check out our free ÌìÃÀÂ鶹 Counsellor Courses)!

We didn’t have time to get to everyone, so we’re answering some of the most popular questions below. Read on to see what’s on the minds of international education professionals.

How do we navigate the process of study abroad, especially with countries tightening their borders?

For international recruitment professionals, information is power. Staying up-to-date with policy changes helps you to offer timely and accurate advice. It’s also important to know which careers students are chasing and which fields need lots of new grads.

Technology can match students to programs that suit their goals, too. For example, ÌìÃÀÂ鶹’s Canadian Visa Calculator uses historical data and machine learning to weigh the likelihood that a student will receive a Canadian study permit. The calculator considers each student based on their desired level of study, destination province, and some demographic questions. While the results are an estimate and don’t replace official immigration advice, they could help you assess how viable different program options are.

From a practical angle, encourage students to start their applications early. Schedule buffer time for gathering application documents and having transcripts translated. Being rushed can lead to errors, which could put their applications at risk. Meanwhile, service interruptions like postal strikes in study destinations can cause mailed applications to be late. So, when possible, apply for student visas and study programs online.

What are the new emerging countries for Canada-bound international students?

In the first six months (H1) of 2024, international student populations from China, Ghana, and Guinea grew year-over-year compared to H1 2023. They were the only ones in Canada’s top 10 post-secondary student populations (by study permit approval) to grow, proving resilient in the wake of policy change.

When we look at Immigrations, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) processed between January to October of 2024, African countries are ones to watch. While it’s true that Nigerian study permit applications are down from the heights of 2023, they remain nearly double their 2022 numbers. Ghanaian applications surged from 4,500 in Jan–Oct 2022 to nearly 25,000 over the same period this year. Similar patterns emerged for applications from Algeria, Senegal, Benin, and Cameroon.

What should we expect as Canada and Australia promote caps on international student numbers?

The Australian cap on international students scheduled for 2025 was , meaning it’s unlikely to move forward. That said, earlier this fall our team wrote about what Australia could learn from Canada’s experience with student caps.

We found student caps affected every study level, and that the resulting reduction in applications can be severe. In Canada, new post-secondary study permit applications fell by an average of 50% year-over-year in the first two months after the cap.

This September, we predicted that the number of Canadian study permits processed would decrease by almost 40% year-over-year compared to 2023. In the end, student interest was higher than we were projecting for Q3 2024—we predicted 120,000 study permits would be processed, but, per IRCC public data, it was closer to 174,000. However, that’s still considerably less than the 225,000 permits processed in Q3 2023. While there are many variables to consider, we project that student demand for Canadian programs will remain significantly lower than 2023 levels through next year.

How are things looking for post-grad studies [in Canada], in light of the last year with no PALs and into next year with PALs?

Earlier this fall, we predicted graduate-level study permit applications would drop by 24% for full-year 2024 versus 2023. After the caps and PALs (provincial attestation letters) were implemented, fewer applications were submitted and approved across Canada in the first half of the year. In fact, Manitoba was the only province where more postgraduate study permits were approved in H1 2024 than in H1 2023. While 12% of the 2025 study permit cap is reserved for postgraduate student applications, cooling student demand and lower study permit approval rates may make 2025 a slower year for post-grad studies.

In what regions of the world are students interested in agriculture programs?

2025 could be a great time for student outreach to Central Asian countries like Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan topped our list of countries with the largest increases in F-1 student visas in the US in 2021/22, followed by Kyrgyzstan in 2022/23. These countries have young populations (in 2023, ) heavily employed in resource industries like agriculture and mining. In fact, in 2022, 25% of (GDP) came from agriculture, forestry, and fishing. As these countries modernize, students may seek international programs that can help them drive innovation.

Our recent Student Pulse Survey also illustrated that students from across Africa were interested in agricultural programs. This answer from a future master’s degree student from Burkina Faso stood out:

“After completing my studies, I plan to pursue a career in agronomy, focusing on rural development and food security. My goal is to contribute to the improvement of agricultural systems in Burkina Faso, particularly through the introduction of sustainable and climate-resilient practices. I aim to work with local or international organizations where I can apply my skills in project management and coordination to support sustainable agriculture programs and efforts to combat malnutrition.”

What are a couple of program options you recommend for international students for next year?

As many countries support their growing aging populations, health care graduates are going to be in high demand. And, as the sector grows, international students are well-positioned to fill empty roles. Nursing programs are a great option, as students build a fairly universal skill set in two- to four-year programs, often with work opportunities built into their classes.

STEM (science, tech, engineering, and math) programs are top-of-mind for many students. STEM careers offer higher average salaries, and in countries like the US are projected to have a much higher rate of job creation than non-STEM roles. For students considering the US, the renewable energy, information security, and data science fields are expected to grow at much faster rates than the workforce average until 2033.

Understanding the application process and knowing what to say during your study permit interview can be challenging. Below, we’ve shared some strategies that can help you make an excellent first impression during your interview.

Notes on Student Visas and Study Permits

All international students must apply and be accepted into an eligible study program before they can apply for a Canadian study permit. First, you’ll receive an offer of admission from a , or DLI. Then, once you pay your tuition deposit and receive your (unless exempt), you can apply for your study permit.

Students may apply for their Canadian study permit and student visa (also known as an electronic travel authorization, or eTA) at the same time.

Student visas and study permits sound similar, but they do different things. A student visa, which allows you to enter Canada, will automatically be issued once you’re approved for a study permit (which allows you to stay in Canada).

Most future students will , but paper applications are also available. Paper applications may be submitted at the Canadian Consulate’s Office or Visa Application Centres in your home country.

It’s important to start your application early enough before your classes begin. To build your timeline, you can on the Government of Canada’s website. While average processing time varies by country, as of early December 2024, the average processing time for study permits was nine weeks.

Interview Tips

Once you arrive in Canada, you must take part in a short interview with a Canadian immigration officer at the airport (or other port of entry). If traveling by air, you’ll need to answer questions about your study plans before you can pick up your luggage. The officer will also review supporting documents which you submitted as part of your initial study permit application, so keep those easily accessible, like in your carry-on luggage.

Having your documents ready can help make a great first impression. Here are a few more strategies to help you ace your Canadian student visa interview.

Be Specific

Before you arrive in Canada, do your research so you can answer questions about your academic institution and program. Knowing details about where you’re going to study, what classes are like, and how you plan to support yourself will help you answer thoughtfully. If you don’t know an answer, be honest; don’t try to make something up.

Conquer Your Nerves With Practice Interviews

Do practice interviews with a family member or friend. Can’t find someone to help? Practice with your pets or plants (they won’t judge)! If you think about your answers beforehand, and say them out loud a couple of times, it might help you feel less nervous during the actual interview.

Consider Your Self

When you rehearse for your Canadian student visa interview, ask your practice interviewer to judge both the content of your answers and your non-verbal cues. Researchers have found non-verbal cues like tone and body language can .

Speaking slowly and clearly can help you sound more confident. Also, meeting the interviewer’s eye and not fidgeting can project further confidence.

Make the Most of Each Question

Every interview for a Canadian student visa will be different, but each one will touch on similar topics. Below, we’ll look at common interview questions and suggest ideas to help you stand out.

Why did you choose this program?

• Talk about the classes you’ve registered for and ones you’re looking forward to, the potential for research in your program, or available work-integrated learning opportunities.
• Explain how the program can help you meet your study goals. Is there a professor you’re looking forward to studying with? Are the program’s co-op opportunities renowned? Do classes integrate theoretical and practical learning, preparing you for success in your field?
• If you’re studying at a university, look up its or ranking. If you’re entering a business program at a top business school, sharing that you’re aware of your program’s standing can help prove your study intent.

Why did you choose to study in Canada, instead of studying or working in your home country?

• Talk about why you chose your college or university, and speak to its strengths. Strengths can range from small class sizes or exclusive program offerings to working on research with specific professors.
• Share examples of job opportunities and salaries in your field that you could get after studying abroad and gaining a higher level of education. Compare those to roles you’re currently eligible for.

What are your test scores (i.e.: TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, GMAT), your GPA, and what are you like as a student?

• If possible, bring copies of your test results and transcripts to the interview so you can share them.
• While test results are important, they aren’t the whole picture. You can talk about your community service or athletic achievements as well.

How are you funding your tuition and living expenses?

• You’ll likely have to share your exact tuition cost, so look it up on the ÌìÃÀÂ鶹 platform.
• If family members are supporting you, know their yearly salary, as well as their employer and full job title.
• Have an idea of what your major monthly rent, food, and insurance will cost. Many universities list cost-of-living averages on their website. Use those numbers to shape your budget!

Are you planning to return to your home country after graduating?

• This question assesses your intentions for coming to Canada. While having dual intent (the desire to stay short-term as a student, and then potentially long-term as a resident) , you still have to prove that your short-term intent (studying) is genuine, or else your study permit may be denied. So, it’s important to speak to your plans and goals as a new student.
• If you plan to leave Canada after your studies, strengthen your response by sharing information about jobs or companies elsewhere that you plan to work with after graduation, and how you’d like to make an impact in your field.

With a bit of preparation, you’ll be ready for your visa interview. The night before you travel to Canada, try your best to get a good night’s sleep so you’ll be alert. Remember to stay hydrated and eat a little (even if you’re nervous). You’ve got this!

Get Started Early

Consider starting your research as early as 24 months before you’d like to start your program. This also gives you time to complete any prerequisite classes for your program, if needed. Plus, some documents may need to be mailed physically.

Although entrance qualifications vary by program, you’ll need to meet or exceed a specific score on an English language proficiency test if you’re from a country where English isn’t an official language.

Did You Know? Forgetting to include your English proficiency test score in your application has serious consequences. If it’s not included, your application may be denied.

The most recognized tests in the US are the (TOEFL) and the (IELTS). Check with your target colleges or universities if other proficiency tests like the (PTE) or the are accepted.

Most undergraduate student applicants need a minimum score of:

• IELTS: between 6.0 and 7.5, with no band less than 6.0
• TOEFL (internet-based test, ): between 60.0 and 105.0 overall

Build Your Application

With 12 to 13 months to go, start assembling your applications. Once you’ve decided which programs you’re applying to, check individual program pages for specific requirements.

These are some common documents you may have to include in your program application:

To get certified copies of academic transcripts, contact your secondary school. Remember: If your transcript isn’t in English, make sure you have enough time to get it professionally translated.

If you need to write an entrance exam, like , find out the date by which it must be written and submitted.

Give yourself time to work on your personal statement or essay if your institution asks for one.

If your program asks for reference letters, past teachers or employers are great people to ask. Ensure they can provide a strong, specific reference as a general or weak reference can hurt your chances.

Assemble a portfolio, if needed. Design, art, software engineering, and architecture programs may ask for one.

Don’t forget to include required personal information like copies of the first page of your passport, your emergency contact info, and a reference list.

If you’ve taken time off to work or care for your family, you may be asked for study gap documentation. This may include a letter of reference from your employer, pay slips, or a statement.

Application Timelines and Options

Specific application deadlines vary by program. Most students in the US start classes in September, which is widely considered the official start of the school year. Some programs may also begin in January or May. Programs in higher demand often have shorter application windows, while other program applications will stay open until the program is full.

US academic institutions offer students one of the following options when they apply:

• Regular Decision (RD): Ideal for students unsure of where they want to apply. RD lets students take more time to complete their application or retake their ACTs or SATs. Most students submitting their application through RD do so in January.
• Early Action (EA): Useful for students who are unsure about attending a particular institution. Students may apply to multiple institutions through early action. Application deadlines are often in early November.
• Early Decision (ED): Best for students that know exactly where they would like to study. The application for ED is a binding contract, so it can be difficult to cancel if the student changes their mind. ED application deadlines are in early November.
• Rolling Admission (RA): A good option for students that apply to one institution through EA, then decide they want to attend a different one. This option is also available if students finish their applications early. RA deadlines are flexible, so students may submit their applications starting in the fall and into the spring of their intake year.

School Responses and Student Visa Information

With four or five months to go, you should hear back from the institutions you applied to. Now, work independently or with a recruitment partner to make your program selection, accept and return the best offer, and pay your tuition deposit.

When applying for admission to the US, international students must complete a , which will be sent to you after accepting an offer of admission from that institution’s international student office. The I-20 certifies your eligibility for nonimmigrant student status.

Once the I-20 is complete, you must pay the and apply online for a nonimmigrant student visa (F-1 or M-1) using Form DS-160. As part of the application, you may also need to .

Once you’ve got your student visa, start setting up your life as an international student. Research housing, health insurance, and travel arrangements. Don’t forget there’s lots to find off-campus, too.

Get Started Early

It’s also good to keep in mind that many institutions take multiple weeks, even months, to process student applications.

To learn about what studying abroad is like, talk with people who have worked or studied in Canada. Ask about their experiences, and what they wish they knew before arriving.

With 15 to 20 months to go, continue researching or working with a study abroad professional to create a list of target programs.

Depending on the programs you’re aiming for, you’ll need to meet or exceed a specific score on an English language proficiency test like . Often, students will need IELTS scores of at least 6.0 to attend a college or regional university, and at least 6.5 for a larger or U15 university. Taking TOEFL instead? Institutions will generally look for a minimum TOEFL score between 70.0 and 90.0. Be sure to check your individual institution’s admission pages for more details.

This gives you enough time to apply for immigration documents. In fact, to apply for your Canadian study permit, you’ll need a Letter of Acceptance from the institution where you’ll be studying, which can take up to two months after the academic application deadline to be issued.
